Volunteering: Good for You, Good for the Hospital

Volunteerism not only benefits the organization where you dedicate your time and talent, but your health as well. Studies have shown that volunteering increases mental health and function, improves physical and emotional health, and reduces stress.

Carroll Hospital has a variety of opportunities open to volunteers of all ages. Our more than 300 volunteers do many different things to assist in the day-to-day operations, from visiting and discharging patients, to working in one of the hospital’s gift shops, to helping at Auxiliary fundraisers.

Meet three of our volunteers:

Kevin Hayes is one of the friendly faces greeting visitors at the hospital’s information desk in the main lobby. He also helps at special events like Taste of Carroll and Tree of Lights. “I’ve always had very good experiences here myself and with my family,” Hayes says of the hospital. “So I decided when I retired to volunteer here.” He encourages those considering a volunteer position at the hospital to learn more about the opportunities available. “Whatever your background is, whatever your interests are or whatever skills you have, there is always a need for them here,” Hayes says.

Anne Lister started helping at the hospital after her husband passed away approximately seven years ago. Her husband was involved with the hospital, she says, so she thought she’d continue the tradition. Today, she is the clothing buyer for the Wellness Boutique in the hospital’s East Pavilion, applying the knowledge from her jewelrymaking career to the marketing and presentation of items at the boutique.

“Volunteering is so rewarding, and I love the women I work with,” says Lister. “We’re all focused on one thing: this is for the hospital.”

This marks the fifth year that Amanda Gibble has volunteered with the hospital, and she has served as the chair of the hospital’s annual Auxiliary gala for the past two. As such, she helped plan the event, garner sponsorships and silent auction items, and set up and tear down the event.

Gibble says it’s rewarding to see the success of an event after being involved in the planning. “The sense of pride and community togetherness when you know how much our hospital and community will benefit from our efforts is truly an amazing feeling,” she says.
