A part of healthy living is knowing some of your basic health indicators. These vary by individual, so be sure to check with your physician to determine what your particular needs may be.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation based on height and weight, and it is used as one screening tool for possible weight problems in adults. The normal range for adults is considered to be 18.5 to 24.9, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Click here to calculate your BMI.


Total cholesterol measures the amount of cholesterol in your blood, including HDL (“good” cholesterol), LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides. The optimal levels for each component are less than 200 mg/dL for total cholesterol; less than 130 mg/dL for LDL; 60 mg/dL for HDL; and less than 150 mg/dL for triglycerides. Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against artery walls as your heart pumps blood. Your blood pressure score consists of two numbers; the systolic number is the blood pressure as your heart beats while pumping blood, and the diastolic blood pressure is your blood pressure at rest between heart beats, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

A normal blood pressure is considered to be less than 120/80.
