Carroll Hospital welcomes Barb Walsh, R.D., L.D.N., C.N.S.C., as its new community nutrition educator in the Tevis Center for Wellness.
In her role, Barb is responsible for the development of the community-based nutrition education programs offered at Carroll Hospital and at various local organizations, including senior centers and libraries. Barb collaborates with The Partnership for a Healthier Carroll County and partners with local businesses to provide nutrition expertise and promote healthy eating for disease prevention.
Programs offered include nutrition and wellness classes following cancer treatment, weight management programs, nutrition screenings and cooking classes.
Barb has 24 years of experience as an inpatient nutrition support specialist, managing an array of clinical conditions with a focus on gastrointestinal illness.
“The field of nutrition, now more than ever, has been shifting toward not only the treatment of—but the prevention of—chronic disease,” she says. “After many years of helping manage the health consequences associated with poor diet habits and a sedentary lifestyle, I wanted to turn my focus to prevention.”
Barb is excited for her new role and the opportunity to help the community. “Carroll Hospital is clearly on the cutting edge of providing preventive and integrated health services, and I really wanted to be a part of it,” she says. “For me, it was the connection to the community, the dedication and compassion of the team, and an environment where everyone supports each other to achieve a common goal.”
