Take Care of Yourself

As we settle into the new year, it is a good time to begin to incorporate self-care into your daily routine.

While it may seem indulgent to some, self-care is simply another way of making sure your needs are being met. Practicing regular self-care can improve your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Studies suggest those who do not practice regular self-care are more likely to suffer from poor physical and mental health.

Taking just a few minutes for yourself each day can make a noticeable difference in your health.

Not sure how to start? Ways to practice self-care include:

Breathing. When we’re stressed, our breath becomes more rapid and shallow; this way of breathing can heighten the feelings of stress and anxiety. A purposeful breathing exercise called 4-7-8 breathing is a commonly used method that can help reduce stress. Breathing in this way can improve awareness while simultaneously calming the nervous system. Try it: sit comfortably, close your eyes (if that feels right to you), and begin by breathing in for 4 even counts, holding the breath for 7 even counts, and gently exhaling for 8 even counts. Repeat as many times as needed.

Purposeful Movement. Purposeful movement includes any activity that gets your body moving—walking, yoga, weight training, gardening, even taking the stairs. Physical activity is one of the most important things you can do to improve your overall health and well-being. No matter your age or ability, improvements are recognized with as little as 30 minutes a day most days of the week.

Taking quiet time. Getting away from distractions can be very therapeutic and offers the space for self-reflection. This may be a good time to incorporate a breathing exercise. The act of being surrounded in silence is an excellent way to allow the body and the mind to relax.

Mindful eating habits. Honoring your body with healthy, nourishing foods can greatly improve your physical and mental health. Taking time to slow down, breathe and enjoy the process of eating provides the opportunity to greatly enhance the experience and helps you to make healthier food choices, prevent overeating, and make the nutrients you are eating more available to the body.
