Carroll Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) was recently awarded Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). The designation recognizes the hospital’s ED for providing excellent care for older adults.
During the accreditation process, the hospital’s standard of care for older patients was examined and the ED was found to have met the GEDA’s specific criteria goals for clinicians and administrators for older patients requiring care. To achieve Level 3 accreditation, the ED was found to have implemented a variety of best practices, including medical staff with specialized geriatric training and had geriatric appropriate equipment and supplies available.

Our medical team understands the unique needs of our older patients, and this accreditation acknowledges our successful efforts in investing the time and resources to ensure they receive comprehensive and high quality care,” says Mark Goldstein, M.D., chief of emergency medicine and president of the medical staff at Carroll Hospital.
To meet the growing needs of Carroll County’s aging population, in 2016 the hospital opened a senior care suite in a quieter area of the ED. The four-room suite features a dedicated nursing station and a host of amenities inside each senior care room geared toward enhancing the comfort of non-critically ill, older patients such as a full-size hospital bed, special lighting and flooring to help prevent injury.
