Tradition and Technology Converge at 33rd Carroll Golf Classic

When Carroll County General Hospital opened its doors in 1961, its slogan “The Hospital You Need,” could not have been more appropriate.  For the first time, those who were sick or injured — as well as those celebrating the new addition of a baby to the family — came to the hospital on the hill. The hospital was a grassroots effort that brought the community together as the residents realized they needed a hospital in order to grow.

In August 1961, Atlee W. Wampler Jr., the new hospital board president and chairman of the successful campaign, was presented with the keys to Carroll County General Hospital. In 1990, the Carroll Golf Classic memorialized his name in the coveted “Wampler Cup” competition. Now in its 33rd year, the tournament has raised millions of dollars, allowing for a small general hospital to become a leading medical center.

This year alone, more than $250,000 was raised in support of hospital programs and services.

Tradition and technology converged at this year’s tournament.  The Carroll General Hospital logo golf balls, pictured above, are owned by a 25-year hospital employee who won them in a fundraising effort many years ago. He held onto them in hopes of being invited to play in the tournament. This year, he had the opportunity to golf in the tournament and could not be more proud to participate in this tradition.

The 2023 Wampler Cup trophies, also pictured above, were 3D printed at the Kahlert Foundation Simulation Center at Carroll Hospital. The new center, dedicated in June, is designed to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date training to our staff and community partners.

The Carroll Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees and the Carroll Golf Classic Planning Committee are dedicated volunteers who work with hospital executives and community members to not only preserve our rich history, but also look forward to embrace technology and provide the best possible outcomes for a healthy community.
